You guys are really retarded.
I totally agree with the ripoff part but don't expect it to have a storyline because it is a MOBA game like League of Legends and DoTA.
It's not an MMO like WoW.
I do despise Gameloft for charging too much damn money on in app purchases but fails to deliver on the actual quality of the app especially the server area. O&C is a fucking laggy game and lacking a lot of areas.

I know this is a year old but these problems are still prevalent in the Mac version. Game Maker 9 is suppose to have cross platform support but that's in 2013 (or so they say). Anyway, good article.

Nope, it's still possible, I can tell you this as someone who uses Xcode professionally every day for game development at work. It's not really a matter of Xcode versions, rather, it's a matter of the shared API's between iOS and Mac OS X, and setting proper build targets from within the same Xcode project.

Or, to detail, if the entire app core is written using Foundation, and if it's properly abstracted from the UI code (which would be separate for both Mac and iOS, the Mac version would rely on AppKit.framework and the iOS version on UIKit.framework), then it's a matter of setting a bunch of build targets & schemes and the app can have 1 code base, and multiple platforms to run on. :)

Although you say this modular direction is how XCode works, this is not strictly true. The latest version of XCode contains all the modules in one program, and is far nicer to use as a result. This project seems like a great idea, but condensing the programs into one may be even more useful.
Good job though - this will be very useful to any Mac game makers out there!

Indeed. Gameloft has released some nice stuff (the first few chapters of their Avatar game for iPhone come to mind), it's not like they don't have it in them.

I don't really mind them doing ripoffs of other games, if it makes them money. All I'm asking is for quality for those ripoffs. A good storyline, different scenarios and worlds, and a bit more attention to detail would cost them nothing, but make the games so much more enjoyable.

Going back to the Order & Chaos analogy, if they wanted to copy WoW, that is fine, but a bit more time invested in Lore, a bit more creativity in the worlds and lands, and generally a LOT more attention to the details that make WoW such an excellent game would've make O&C an excellent game.

But instead they just ripped off the 'major' gameplay elements from WoW, and forgot to steal the charm too. It's not the fact that they steal games that annoys me.

It's the fact they can't even steal games properly. :(

I fully agree. Once upon an time, in a time when the Ngage was still considered a fairly decent smartphone, Gameloft was one of the biggest and brightest stars on the mobile gaming scene. While they did release a lot of games based on Ubisoft titles (since they were formed by ex-Ubisoft employees) they also created original titles and produced the best mobile games in the industry.
For a time, it was good.

Then something happened: They grew to big, stretched themselves too thin, started to rely on licences and turned in increasingly shoty products (much like the late Midway). Then the iPhone came, and then the smartphone market and it became obvious that you CANNOT be expected to charge $10 USD for 30 minute games.
But for a time, they where good. They could still access the best developers in the industry and had access to the non-smartphone market.

But then service providers started increasing the support for appstores, and pulled support of the native stores they had (it was expensive and not generating a profit). Instead of following the success of the Earthworm jim HD game they made for the Xbox, they went back to their old tricks of producing knock-offs of console games. When they had the 2d mobile platform, this was sort of charming. Now, this is despicable.

I do not need to wish Gameloft to die a slow and painful death. It is already happening.
